Renting a scooter can be a fun way to see
Vieques, though it will not be an alternative for getting to some of the
beaches, which are at the end of miles of dirt road. Prices are around
$50/day.
Travel by bicycle is, in our opinion, for the
well-trained cyclist, as there are considerable hills in either direction
crossing the island. That said, there are exciting mountain-biking
expeditions available through the tour companies listed here.
Because of the US Navy's occupation over many
years (from the 1940's through 2003), most of the land in Vieques is
undeveloped and criss-crossed by a few dirt roads and paths. This
makes it a unique eco-tourist destination in the Caribbean and serious
mountain bikers should be thrilled with the possibilities here.
