Shopping in Vieques
Shopping in Vieques can be a real treasure hunt, whether you are looking for
food for the pantry, a gorgeous island-style dress or a souvenir to take home.
 Gift shops are located either in the main tourist area of Esperanza or in the
main town of Isabel II. Out on the island in the barrios, you'll find 'colmados'
(small grocery stores) to meet your basic needs, and maybe something to tuck in
the corner of your suitcase, like a 1/2 pound bag of Puerto Rican coffee.
Remember, you are not allowed to take any live plants, fruits or vegetables home
on the plane, and your bags will be X-rayed at the International airport
in San Juan. There are vendors there at the airport who are cleared to
sell some fresh items, like pineapples.
At
our last update, there was a Farmer's Market on Saturdays on the Malecón in
Esperanza and another one on Tuesdays near the GE Plant at the intersection of
Rts. 200 and 201. A new
organic farm in Vieques
has begun to offer produce and herbs.
