Camping in Vieques

Balneario Sun Bay (Sombé) is the only publicly maintained beach in Vieques and welcomes campers.  A permit costs $10 per day and reservations are required.

Call 787-741-8189.

Amenities include bathrooms, showers, changing rooms, guards and a snack bar/restaurant.

Sun Bay is on the south side of Vieques, the opposite side from the ferry dock and airport.  Públicos (taxi vans)  meet incoming ferries and flights and can transport you here or to any other island destination.

Grazing horses will be your companions at Sun Bay.  Some tourist guides will tell you the horses are "wild", but they do have owners who know where to find them when it's time to saddle up for a ride on holidays.

We have also seen manatees in the shallows at the same end of Sun Bay where the camp sites are located.

Use caution and common sense, as you would at any other open camping location; safeguard your valuables and bring bug repellent as the "no-see-ums" come out for a period of time at sunset.

Sun Bay is a gorgeous beach with ample shade and is generally not at all crowded. However, it is popular with visitors from Puerto Rico on holidays, especially Easter Week.
