Puerto Ferro Bay at Sunset |
The time capsule of the last 60 years was cracked open
revealing an unknown jewel. Vieques Island, PR. is becoming a
household word after being an unknown paradigm. Visitors from
every corner of the world are coming to experience an antidote
only found here that sooth the hustle and bustle. With 55 square
miles of island under transformation, the old regime is on there
way out and the new hope and vision is on there way in. I came
here to satisfy a life long dream of living in a community small
enough to make a positive impact.
The natural and mostly unexplored beauty of Vieques was and
still is the antidote to things missing in what some people call
“the real world”. Like explorers of old we have all come here to
do and be things, done and seen by few. After only five short
years of being on the tourism radar, Vieques has made leaps and
bounds into its legacy of the Greatest Island in the Caribbean.
This by no means is news to those who are already acquainted
with this one of a kind destination.
Our Bioluminescent Bay is the brightest in the world. Our
beaches have been the backdrops for countless commercials and
content marketing projects, and other activities for the do-it
yourself explorer are waiting for our arrival with bated breath.
With countless trails and seldom used roads that cut through and
across this island the soloist or D.I.Y. Adventure traveler has
many safe and affordable options to keep himself entertained.
The development of new biking and hiking trail networks
currently under review by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural
Resources (DNRA) and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service are ramping up
to be all original in lots of ways. A Cycling, Hiking,
Kayak-Fishing, Snorkeling, Birding, Diving Mecca, with the
safety factor being higher than many other destinations, and
price structure lower than our neighbors, Vieques offers a
buffet of activities for the whole family.
As of October 1st, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is granting
permits to a handful of providers who will take you into the
once off- limit areas of Camp Garcia, which occupies almost one
third of the island. The USFWS controls 54% of the island’s
land, so we are truly blessed in this regard. Now you can
explore more of the islands scenic vistas and out of the way
locations with the islands best and most knowledgeable
providers.
Kayak-Fishing is my favorite new emerging sport on the island.
This sport is beginning to send a beacon across the world in
terms of popularity. With so many mangrove lined shorelines this
is a very special place for the evolution of this sport. Because
of its across the board appeal it allows most any able bodied
person access to fishing our waters without taking out a
mortgage on your home.
With our 170 plus privately owned guest homes and rental
properties on the island you should have no problem finding a
place to call home for a long weekend, month or like some a
lifetime. If there was one thing I could want from all my
friends, old customers and casual acquaintances it would be to
get a dose of Vieques Island. As a business owner and more
importantly a resident I extend an invitation to everyone who
