Google & Overture:
Pay-per-click Search Engines
Google.Com and Overture.Com are two of the best
known Pay-per-click Search Engines.
What are PPC's?
They are Search Engines, #1, but they also allow anyone to pay to
have their site advertised or placed at the top of the search
results. They have different ways of doing this, but the results
are the same. Someone types in your keyword to search for
something, your listing comes up in the search at the placement
you've opted for and you pay for it.
They have different formulas for payment. They
are both based on "click-thru's". This is when someone
uses that link provided to "click-thru" to the site.
Google charges for either impressions or click-thru's depending on
the plan, while Overture uses a
formula of the ratio of impressions to click-thru's. The
click-thru formulas I've found to be much more economical, and costs 2-3 times
less over the same period.
What are impressions and click-thru's?
Impressions are the link showing up in the
search results. Click-thru is when they actually click on the link
and go through to the site.
Can you just use one?
Sure, but the problem is they each sell their services to
different search engines, so you need them both for continuous
placement. In Vieques, the problem is much more acute than in
Culebra, because of the presence of the myriad of protest sites.
Their "relevancy" and "frequency of word
count" will naturally place them higher in the search engine
results. It's much easier to be relevant without these services in
Culebra than in Vieques, because of this.
Do you need the Pay-per-click service?
Not necessarily. If you are getting good
response to your ads, why pay more? If not, and your page isn't
well ranked, then these services are an option.
Do I need #1 ranking?
Definitely not. In fact some studies have shown
that it's best to be ranked #2 or #3.
