Living and Working in Vieques..

End of Summer, 2005

Hot. The hottest summer any of us can remember. People positively drooping with the heat. Restaurants closed, the ocean is no relief it too is simply wet and hot. Then, rain.

Fingers crossed, no hurricane, but rain. Rain in the Caribbean can be romantic; especially if one has a tin roof. But rain in the Caribbean can also be an enemy.

People are running around in the mud looking at property, at houses, at fixer-uppers. Sliding and slipping around the island, trying to find that one perfect place. They make a full price offer only to discover the price was raised overnight. How can this be? Why not? This is Vieques, after all, the newly discovered jewel of the Spanish Virgin Islands.

There is nothing to do here anyway, so the rain subverts the only distraction a quick, refreshing swim.

The cable goes out in cloudy weather, better load up on videos. On line orders from Barnes and noble take three or four days to arrive. During these rainy days, I wonder what I am doing here; I wonder what anyone who isnt born here is doing here.

Thank heaven for memory. Lodged back there are slivers of light and heat of long swims that offer a release of tension and nourish optimism.

A shard of memory reminds me of fun hearty laughing on a terrace with good friends. I did that, I can do that again.

Soon, we will be an hour later than EST; Charlie Rose comes on at midnight, for heavens sake. Can he possibly be worth it? Then I remember how much I enjoy being awake a full hour before the East coast; how private, almost sinful, that hour feels in the morning.

Beware, you envious observers, beware of the seductive quality of Vieques. You may find yourself one day, sitting motionless at your desk, staring out at the mist, wondering what you are doing here.

Regards,

Sheila
