I had a great trip to Culebra in April. Met some nice
folks and had a good time. We traveled over from Vieques on the 5:45am
ferry and I got some beautiful sunrise shots. Spent my first day with my
friends from Vieques touring the island. They had never been there before.
So, we rented a jeep, and we were off. First stop, I checked in at
Mamacita's and we had breakfast while we were there. It was good and ample
portions. Great coffee, too! From there we stopped at a couple of shops,
so the girls could pick up some souvenirs. Then we headed southeast out of
town skirting the southern coast of Ensenada Bay and out to the tip by
Soldado Bay. The views were breathtaking, the water was emerald green and
the cactii were huge. We passed many B&B's and guesthouses on this
part of the journey. We turned around and headed back thru town past the
airport north and west to Flamenco Beach, which is the main beach and the
only one maintained by the Parks system. It was more than I expected with
showers and camp sites, and BBQ areas, not to mention that the beach was
pretty nice too.
After fooling around and walking and swimming for a couple
of hours, we were off in search of Zoni Beach to the north and east of
Ensenada Bay. It was the furthest out, if anything can be far away on this
quaint island, and after considerable sightseeing we finally arrived. I
hate to sound like a broken record, but it's beautiful too, and it
stretches forever, or so it seems. And, if you're worried about crowds,
forget about it. There were maybe 18 people in about four family groups
along its entire length.
We finally left there after another dip and went for some
more sightseeing. Found that the other beaches are very well hidden, and
that there are some excellent hilltop viewing areas, an abundance of
horses out wandering the roads, many dead end roads and quite a few
Iguana's.
My friends went back that night, but i stayed over. More
on that later.
